Discourse

There hasn't been any discussion on this forum for a long time, so I thought I'd add the latest discussion that is taking place on the mailing list, IRC, and discord. Some people feel that it's time to move on and perhaps be able to be more inclusive than we have been. Discourse is such a choice. Di...

And indeed, here it is - all cleaned up and ready to make a go of it again. The grand re-opening!

Inventing TLDs

Thinking up new TLDs seems to be a fun thing for many people. I enjoy it too. Others take it further and make great plans for theirs and then come and ask the OpenNIC community to add their TLD. I notice though that when one is approved and added, they don't come back and tell us how well they're do...

Re: Why do you use OpenNIC?

This is still a good topic. Constantly defining the value of one's tools is a process that can server to make things more efficient and indeed, more valuable.

Re: Newbie tips?

Newcomers to OpenNIC may also not all want to run servers. For those who are more interested in other aspects, such as using the existing servers or domains, there is understanding and advocacy. I recommend doing a web search on alternate DNS roots and doing some reading. This link is a good place t...

Re: The can of worms.. DNS FILTERING

What kinds of things would you filter?

I'm not personally into any kind of censorship except that which one does oneself. Perhaps this will be like that. In any case, I do support people's freedom to do as they wish in this regard.

Forum Accessibility

Normally when one is a regular reader of a forum one wouldn't start on the index page. That would be most tedious and difficult since recent and active discussions is what is of interest. In the case of this forum the entry page would be this: https://talkdotgeek.com/search.php?search_id=active_topi...

Re: The Worst gTLD

Well the dot horse was pretty wild. I really enjoyed the website called walmart.horse It was an art project and very funny. Quite simple, a head shot of a horse in front of a Walmart store. Walmart got all bent out of shape about it and forced him to take it down. Which was also funny. Edit: just no...

Logging And Security

I've often seen questions about OpenNIC logging on our IRC and elsewhere. It seems to be one of the reasons people chose OpenNIC. I can see why. Google stores DNS info in a temporary fashion for 24 to 48 hours. This contains personal identification. Another set of logs is less personal but is kept f...

DDoS in recent months

We have all seen the recent problems and there is a lot of talk because of the IoT role in this. No doubt something can and should be done with firmware, but the basic problem is still DNS. El Reg just put out an article where Paul Vixie weighs in on the issue. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/12/0...
